  • What is a Learning Disability?

    Learning disabilities (LD) creates difficulties in certain areas of learning and can impact an individual's academic performance. LD may cause trouble in listening, speaking, reading, spelling, or computing math. One example of LD is dyslexia which makes it hard for individuals to read, write, and/or spell. Although LD is a life long experience, taking steps to manage it early during childhood can help increase the likelihood of success in school and other areas. 

    What are the symptoms of a learning disability?

    If you experience a few of these symptoms that makes your academic performance difficult, a learning disability may be the cause:
    • Difficulty following teacher's instruction/lectures in class
    • Slow reading rates or frequent need to reread passages 
    • Difficulty expressing yourself in words or in writing
    • Longer than average study times
    • Feeling well-prepared for a test only to obtain a low or failing score
    • Confusing similar words when reading or speaking
    • Mixing up mathematical symbols or letters
    • Difficulty grasping mathematical concepts
    • Problems understanding graphs, diagrams, or punctuation

    What can I expect during my or my child's assessment?

    A comprehensive assessment starts with a extensive clinical interview including parent consultation (if applicable). The testing materials will consist of measures that assess for reading/writing, personality, learning style, language and problem solving skills, and IQ (intelligence quotient). A report will be generated, typically within 2-3 weeks, which can be used in his/her Individual Education Plan (IEP) or school accommodations.
  • What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder consisting of deficits in social communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. These impairments can lead to challenges in the use of verbal and nonverbal communicative behaviors in social interactions.

    What are the symptoms of ASD?

    Here are common symptoms for ASD which can vary person to person:
    • Difficulties interpreting what others are thinking or feeling
    • Deep knowledge of one particular topic
    • Tendency to engage in repetitive or routine behaviors
    • Only participates in a restricted range of activities
    • Strict consistency to daily routines; outbursts when changes occur
    • Inflection that does not reflect feelings
    • Trouble keeping up a conversation
    • Difficulty regulating emotions 
    • Trouble interpreting facial expressions, body language, or social cues 

    What can I expect during my or my child's assessment? 

    A comprehensive assessment starts with a extensive clinical interview including parent consultation (if applicable). The testing materials will consist of cognitive, adaptive, emotional/personality, & achievement testing. A report will be generated, typically within 2-3 weeks, which can be used in his/her Individual Education Plan (IEP) or school accommodations (if applicable).
  • Bariatric
    ​Surgery

    Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure that helps patients struggling with obesity to lose weight. Mental health evaluation are required prior to the surgery and its purpose is to ensure a patient's mental health will not impede their ability to be safe and manage follow-care post-surgery. 

    What exactly am I being assessed for?

    The focus of this evaluation is determine the following: 
    • Understand the risks & requirements of the operation
    • Is not likely to harm her/himself by neglecting important medical advice
    • Has and uses adequate social support system
    • Has realistic expectations of the surgical outcome
    • Can cope with life changes following surgery

    How long will it take?

    This comprehensive assessment typically takes 3-4 hours to complete.

    What happens after I'm done with my assessment?

    A full written clinical report will be sent to you and your referring surgeon within in 7 business days upon completion of your assessment.

    Spinal Cord Stimulator

    Spinal Cord Stimulator surgery is a medical procedure that helps patients struggling with chronic pain caused by dysfunction in pain receptors. During the surgery, a small spinal cord stimulator device is implanted underneath the skins and attached to the nerve system. Your surgeon wants to ensure that you are mentally and physically prepared for this surgery and the goal is to avoid adverse risk caused by your mental and physical health.

    What exactly am I being assessed for?

    The focus of this evaluation is determine the following: 
    • Understand the risks & requirements of the operation

    Gender
    ​ Affirming

    Most physician require a psychological evaluation before prescribing transgender hormones or conducting gender reassignment surgery. These evaluations typically serve:
    • To ensure that a person is fully capable of making a major medical decision
    • To ensure that a person's transgender feelings are not actually a specific symptom of a mental health disorder (such as schizophrenia or obsessive compulsive disorder)
    • To help medical professionals and the patient be aware of any other mental health related issues that should be monitored during transition (such as anxiety & depression)
    • To establish a relationship between the patient and a therapist just in case the patient needs any therapeutic support through the process 

    How long will it take?

    If you are already in therapy (either with Essential Psychotherapy Services or another therapist), this evaluation will typically takes 2-3 hours to complete. However, if you are not in therapy, the evaluation will likely take longer.  

    What happens after I'm done with my assessment?

    A full written clinical report will be sent to you and your referring physician within in 7 business days and consult with them as needed
  • What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

    ​ADHD occurs when a group of brain activity responsible for controlling our ability to focus and organize thoughts becomes difficult to control. Our executive functions allows us to lead safe and productive lives.
    ADHD can affect all ages and testing can be completed for both children and adults. ​Common ADHD symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity, or inattention. 

    What are the symptoms of ADHD?

    If you experience a few of these symptoms that makes your academic/work performance difficult, ADHD may be the cause:
    • Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or with other activities
    • Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
    • Often fidgets with or taps hands or feet, or squirms in seat
    • Often unable to play or take part in leisure activities quietly
    • Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)
    • Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to do tasks that require mental effort over a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework)

    What can I expect during my or my child's assessment?
